Andrei Mezheyevskiy, DOB January 21, 1998, acute myelogenous leukemia (relapse)

For the first time, Andrei was hospitalized in 2006, when he was 8 years old. The doctors from the specialized children’s hospital in Kiev confirmed the diagnosis of myeloblastosis. Andrei spent 8 months at the hospital together with his mother Olga. During this period of time, he got hepatitis B and C. He has 10 blocks of radiotherapy with total dose 18Gr. Then, for the next 11 months, Andrei had to come to Kiev every month to get Cytozar.
He also had to take Lanvis for a year. In January last year he completed the course of the supportive therapy. It seemed that the treatment was already in the past. Regular follow-ups in Lugansk didn’t reveal any problems. Even a week ago the doctors in Lugansk said everything was all right. But then, all of a sudden, Andrei got low hemoglobin: within a couple of days it fell from 100 to 75. Olga took Andrei to the hospital in Kiev immediately. She didn’t want to rely on the opinion of the local doctors. Unfortunately, she was right – the punch showed 72% of blasts in Andrei’s bone marrow. On top of that, the doctors suspect that this time Andrei has lymphoblastic leukemia, rather than myeloblastosis. They will need to do another punch on Monday, which will help them to determine the final diagnosis. Now Andrei and his mother are staying with their relatives in Kiev because there are no beds available at the intensive chemotherapy department. The doctors say as soon as there is a bed available, probably next Wednesday, they will hospitalize Andrei.
Andrei’s mother already has a list of medications she will need to buy before her son can be hospitalized. All she has is just $145. She is a widow (Andrei’s father died in an accident in 2000) and she needs help in purchasing the medications for her son.
