Anna Raikhel, DOB November 7, 2001, acute lymphoblastic leukemia, second hyperearly isolated CNS relapse
By admin. Filed in They Need Help |
Anna is the only child in the family of Irene and Bogdan Raikhel. For the first time, she was admitted to the children’s oncohematology department in February 2007 (two years ago). She was diagnozed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia. She spent nine months at the hospital being treated under the protocol ALL-BFM-2000. When she was discharged from the hospital in November 2007, we thought it was all over. Yes, she still had to undergo the supporting therapy and to do regular blood tests, but it was nothing compared with what she had already gone through. Unfortunately, she didn’t have an opportunity to spend a lot of time at home. As early as in winter 2008, she started complaining about headache and pain in her back and legs. The doctors didn’t even want to think it was a relapse.
But you can’t beat the results of the punch – it was a hyperearl
y isolated CNS relapse. It occurred four months after the main treatment had been completed. The doctors came across a case like that only twice in their practice. And here we go again. However, this time the treatment was more intense. Anna had 10(!) blocks of intensive chemotherapy and 10 blocks of radiotherapy. At the same time, she never missed even one arts and crafts class. She never complains, always jokes, always tries to do things faster and better than other children. When the treatment was over, she was discharged from the hospital. We t
hought she wouldn’t have to come back to the hospital again. But one month later she got fever, low blood count, and headache. The doctors refuse to believe it but it’s the repeated relapse. Neurorelapse. Most likely, Anna will need to have a bone marrow transplantation from a nonrelative donor (none of her relatives can be used as donors). Neither the surgery nor the donor search are performed in Ukraine. They will need to go to another country. It can be either the country of the former USSR (e.g., Russia or Belarus) or the European country (e.g., Italy or Germany). The donor search and the bone marrow transplantation cost so
mewhere around $100,000 - $150,000. Anna’s parents won’t be able to raise this amount of money on their own. They never asked for help before. They always tried to find money for Anna’s treatment themselves because they saw other children, who needed help more than Anna did. But now Anna is in the worst situation. Her parents doesn’t have anything to sell. All they have is a bachelor suite in Kiev, where they live together with Anna’s grandmother. What else can we say? Help her. Please. If you knew Anna personally, I wouldn’t even have to ask you for that.
