Vitaliy Oncha passed away today at 8.30 a.m. I don’t know what to say… The boy completed the protocol, went back home and all of a sudden his condition got worse. He was hospitalized to the intensive care unit, where he passed away. We were about to start the search of the clinic for the bone marrow transplantation, which is the only cure for the hybrid leukemia. Unfortunately, we ran out of time. Our priest was going to take communion to Vitaliy this weekend. Instead, he will have to attend a funeral service…

Vitaliy Oncha, DOB February 24, 1999, acute hybrid leukemia

website4My name is Irene Yakubovskaya. I am a mother of Vitaliy Oncha. Vitaliy is the youngest child in the family. I have five more children. When Vitaliy was three years old, his father died. We live in a village in Nikolaev region. We don’t have a phone. Neither we have any bus routes to our village. In autumn 2008, Vitaliy got the symptoms of the acute respiratory disease. The doctors treated him for the cold, pneumonia, and rheumatism. A month later, Vitaliy was referred to a hematologist, who diagnozed Vitaliy with leukemia.

website3Then we had to go to Kiev for the confirmation of the diagnosis. The doctors in Kiev were not able to confirm the diagnosis right away because this type of leukemia is very rare. It’s a hybrid leukemia, when both lines get affected. Vitaliy has been staying at the hospital since October 16, 2008. We put our hopes on God and on the doctors. I believe my son’s life can be saved. After all, the leukemia in children is treatable. It’s not a death sentence. We are determined to fight for his life. But we need your help.
