Valeria Sysoyeva, DOB August 17, 2006, embryonal lipoblastoma of the retroperitoneal space
Valeria was born on August 17, 2006. She was born healthy. The problem started in an ordinary way: she lost her appetite and became moody. We thought it was nothing other than the child’s whims because there were no other symptoms. On March 18, 2009, Valeria complained about abdominal pain. We took her to the hospital. The doctors thought she had appendicitis and decided to give her a surgery. But her mother insisted on the ultrasound examination, which showed a large tumor in the retroperitoneal space. The world collapsed for us that day. We felt doomed, despaired, and horrified. Everything seemed unreal. It felt as if it was happening to someone else, rather than to us. We didn’t want to believe it. The only question we had was, “Why?” But we got over the first shock and had to start fighting the disease back.
We took Valeria to the Cancer Institute in Kiev, where Valeria spent two months with her mother undergoing the biopsy, computer tomography, blood tests, histologic analyses and so on. Finally, she was diagnozed with the embryonal lipoblastoma of the retroperitoneal space (later on the doctors started doubting this diagnosis). Valeria completed a course of the chemotherapy but it was ineffective. Since the tumor is located in the near proximity to the abdominal cavity organs and to the great vessels, the doctors in Kiev refused to remove it. We had to take Valeria to the cancer hospital in St. Petersburg. Unfortunately, we have to pay for our stay and treatment there because we are Ukrainian citizens. Now Valeria and her parents are in St. Petersburg. The doctors there think she has a neuroblastoma. The approximate cost of her treatment in St. Petersburg is $15,000 – 20,000, including the histologic analyses, chemotherapy, surgery, and radiotherapy. One bed-day at the hospital costs $65. Although we did our best raising money among our relatives and friends, we still are unable to pay for Valeria’s treatment at the hospital in St. Petersburg. Valeria’s life can be saved. But she will need your help. Now Valeria and her mother rent a room in St. Petersburg.
