Nastya Kotova, DOB December 15, 1994, acute myeloblastosis M2

Nastya is a very good-looking, curious, kind, active, and sociable girl. She enjoys reading and painting. Last summer Nastya started complaining about easy fatigability, became pale and very quiet. Nastya’s mother thought her daughter was just growing up or was getting tired working in the garden. A couple of months later, Nastya said she got the earache. Her mother, who is a nurse, took Nastya to the hospital right away. The ENT specialist prescribed the treatment. When Nastya started losing her hearing, she got the drainages inserted into both ears. She also had a surgery done. But on January 3, 2010, when her face got swollen and the pain in the ears became unbearable, Nastya’s mother took her to the hospital again because she thought all those symptoms were the side effects of the prescribed medications. Instead, Nastya was diagnosed with acute myeloblastosis M2! Everyone was in shock. Up until January 18, the girl was undergoing treatment in Dnepropetrovsk – chemotherapy, weekly blood transfusions, bone marrow punctures.
Now Nastya is in Kiev. Her parents have to pay for her treatment, which is very expensive and unaffordable for them. Nastya’s father is a gas station attendant with monthly wages $200. Her mother is a nurse making only $120 a month. Nastya also has a 6-year-old brother. Now he is with his aunt because his parents are busy looking for money and taking care of Nastya. She needs continuous treatment. Each day of delay in treatment considerably reduced her chances for survival. One day Nastya asked me, “Is it true that people feel sorry for younger children sick with cancer much more than they do for teenagers like me?” I didn’t know what to say. Just for the first stage of treatment Nastya urgently needs about $7,000. It’s a very expensive treatment and her parents won’t be able to pay for it on their own. Teenagers are children, too. They also need our help and compassion. Please, help Nastya and her mother Alyona.
